漆 芸 MASAKO OUCHI

漆芸とは

ウルシの木から採取される樹液を用いて工芸品等をつくる技術。器物を保護す

る塗料や接着剤として、古くは縄文時代から使用されており、英語で漆器を

 Japanと呼ぶように、日本を代表 する伝統工芸の一つです。

 

Shitsugei (Lacquerware crafting)

Shitsugei is the art of creating various artifacts with sap of Urushi lacquer tree,

an indispensable coating/adhesive material in Japan since the Jomon era

(14,000-300 BCE). Otherwise known as “Japan,” Urushi lacquerware is one of

the most prominent product of the traditional crafts of Japan.

 

漆の特徴

蒔絵、彫漆、沈金、蒟醤、髹漆、螺鈿等の多彩な装飾技法に加え、漆によって

生成された塗膜 は、酸・アルカリに強く、耐熱、耐湿、防虫、抗菌などの働

きまで兼ね備えています。漆は芸 術性、機能性共に優れた素材です。

また、漆は十五年育てた木、一本から約 200グラムしか採取されないため、

とても貴重な材料 とされています。

  

Characteristics of Urushi Lacquer

Urushi lacquerware comes in various styles, such as gold-sprinkled lacquer,

carved lacquer, gold-sunken lacquer, polished lacquer, lacquer coating, and

shell inlays. Urushi lacquer is not only valued for is beauty, but also for its

functionality: it is known for its resistance against acidic and alkaline stress,

heat, humidity, insect and bacteria.

Urushi remains a precious material today, for only 200g of lacquer can be

obtained from a 15-year- old Urushi tree.
